Detailed day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Drive time: approximately 8–10 hours, depending on the starting point and lodge sector

After an early breakfast, meet your safari driver-guide and begin the journey to southwestern Uganda. Travel through changing landscapes, rural trading centres, banana plantations and rolling hills. Stop at the Equator crossing for photographs and refreshments before continuing towards Bwindi.

Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or evening, check in, enjoy dinner and prepare for the next day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Meals: Lunch and dinner, depending on your departure time.

Overnight: Lodge near your assigned Bwindi trekking sector.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest

Trekking duration: varies with the gorillas’ location and terrain

Enjoy an early breakfast before transferring to the park headquarters for a briefing by the rangers. You will learn about trekking guidelines and be assigned a habituated gorilla family.

Enter the forest with your ranger guides and follow the trails through thick vegetation and uneven terrain. The trek can take several hours, depending on where the gorillas are located.

Once you find the gorillas, you will normally spend one hour observing them. Watch the family interact, feed, groom and care for their young, while taking photographs without flash.

Return to your lodge after the trek for lunch or a late meal and time to relax. If time and energy allow, an optional community visit may be arranged.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Overnight: Lodge near Bwindi.

Day 3: Bwindi Forest and Lake Bunyonyi

A relaxed day after gorilla trekking

After breakfast, enjoy the fresh forest air before travelling towards Lake Bunyonyi, one of southwestern Uganda’s most scenic lakes.

Depending on your lodge location and departure time, enjoy views of terraced hills and lakeside communities. Optional activities may include a guided canoe ride, a nature walk or simply relaxing at the lakeshore.

Spend the afternoon enjoying the peaceful setting and reflecting on your gorilla encounter.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, depending on your selected package.

Overnight: Lodge near Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 4: Return to Entebbe or Kampala

Drive time: approximately 8–10 hours to Entebbe, depending on traffic and stops

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge before beginning your return journey. Travel through southwestern Uganda, with a stop for lunch along the way.

Depending on your schedule, you may make a brief stop for photographs or refreshments before continuing to Entebbe or Kampala.

Your guide will drop you at your hotel or at Entebbe International Airport. For international flights, we recommend allowing enough time for the long road transfer and airport check-in. A domestic flight can be arranged as an alternative to the long drive.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch, depending on departure time.

End of tour.

Important information about gorilla trekking

  • Book your gorilla permit early. Your travel dates and preferred trekking sector must be checked before the permit is confirmed.

  • Be prepared for hiking. Trails may be steep, muddy and slippery, and the trek can last several hours.

  • Bring suitable gear. Sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, a rain jacket, drinking water and a small daypack are recommended.

  • Follow ranger instructions. Maintain the required distance from the gorillas and follow all park rules.

  • Plan your return flight carefully. The drive from Bwindi to Entebbe is long; a domestic flight may be more suitable for travellers with an earlier departure.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights are included in this 4-day gorilla tour?

The itinerary includes three nights: two nights around Bwindi and one night near Lake Bunyonyi.

How long does gorilla trekking take?

The duration varies depending on the gorilla family’s location and the terrain. The trek may take several hours, and visitors normally spend one hour with the gorillas once they are found.

Can this tour be customised?

Yes. You can request budget, mid-range or luxury accommodation, adjust the starting point, or consider a domestic flight to reduce road travel.

Is the gorilla permit included in the price?

It can be included in your quotation. The permit cost and availability should be confirmed for your nationality, travel dates and trekking sector before booking.

Can I do this tour in four days if I have an evening international flight on Day 4?

It may be possible, but the road transfer is long and traffic can be unpredictable. A domestic flight or an additional night in Uganda is safer for tighter flight schedules.
